Although it may seem like the cheapest and easiest way to start pond building, choosing pond liner rather than pond-safe materials is an easy mistake to make, but one that could prove expensive later on down the road if you ever decide you want to change out your liner for any reason. If you use non-pond safe products such as pond liners as the foundation for your waterscape project, it will eventually cause problems with leaks or even worse – fish death or plant due to poor water quality!
If your pond seems like it’s not flourishing, then it may be time to take action! Healthy pond plants should have lush leaves and sturdy stems that can withstand strong winds. If your pond plants are not thriving, try turning off any filter or pump systems for about an hour or two after heavy rains so excess water can drain away from the pond bottom quickly. Natural pond processes will begin again as soon as the excess water has drained away. If you continue to struggle with pond plant life, adding more fish might be the best solution because they provide nutrients that help plants grow! If plants still haven’t perked up within a month or two of adding additional fish, then it may be time to get new pond plants.
Before you run out and grab a massive pond pump for your water garden pond, consider the impact that you’re going to have on the environment when it comes to electricity usage! All pond pumps operate in a similar way in that they filter out particles in the pond and then send the remaining water back into the pond through a waterfall feature or fountain. There’s no reason why you can’t enjoy these features without overloading your ecological footprint. If you already own an electric-powered pump, consider switching over to a solar pond pump which won’t add strain on your energy bill. These pumps come equipped with rechargeable batteries which are charged by the sun via solar panels, so you don’t have to worry about changing out batteries or plugging them in. Just sit back and enjoy all of your pond’s features with minimal impact on the environment!
To ensure that your pond life is thriving, make sure to choose pond plants according to their water level needs. Floating pond plants such as lilies require at least six inches of water above their crowns, while marginal pond plants can remain submerged up to their roots if necessary. Establishing these different levels is easy with some pond liners which are designed especially for this purpose. Pond liners made specifically for shallow pond depths give you the flexibility to add pond soil and pond plants to create a pond bottom pond life can enjoy.
If your pond lacks the oxygen needed to support healthy pond bacteria, fish and pond plant growth, then consider investing in an aerator such as this one which is designed for ponds up to 2,000 gallons.
